“Music is a
more potent
instrument
than any
other for
education”
PLATO
A full symphony youth orchestra that provides a unique opportunity for the most serious and talented young musicians in the Big Country to perform advanced repertoire that will challenge and inspire.
In partnership with Suzuki educators Joyce McGlaun
and Caitlin Clark, this program is a part of the
Philharmonic’s Academy of Music initiative to reach
students of all ages beginning as early as infancy.
Held annually at the Abilene Convention Center in October, the series reaches approximately 6,500 area students in grades three through five – including public, private and home-school. Our Music Director designs student-friendly programs alongside a local elementary music specialist who creates the Teacher’s Guide curriculum book, integrating with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) guidelines.
The Abilene Philharmonic’s now annual Nelda Hodges Young Artist Competition was established in 2008 to help support outstanding young musicians in the Abilene area. The competition is open to woodwind, brass, percussion, string, and piano students between the ages of 12-18 that live in Texas School Regions 1-3, 5-10, 12, 14-19, and have not yet graduated high school.
