Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra Appoints John Doney as New Executive Director

Abilene, Texas – August 29, 2023

The Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to announce the appointment of John Doney as  its new Executive Director. Doney, 39, brings extensive experience and a dynamic vision to the organization, having served previously as General Manager of Symphony Arlington and Development Coordinator for The Florida Orchestra in St. Petersburg.

“We are delighted to welcome John Doney to the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra family” said Board President Joe Biles. “His energy, creativity, and deep understanding of both the artistic and operational aspects of an orchestra make him the perfect fit to lead us forward. We look forward to working with him to further elevate the orchestra’s impact in Abilene and beyond.”

“I am thrilled to welcome John Doney as the new Executive Director of the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra,” said Music Director David Itkin. “John’s passion for music, his proven  leadership in the arts, and his dedication to community engagement align perfectly with our orchestra’s values.”

Doney’s career in the arts spans over 15 years, during which he held performing and administrative positions with the U.S. Army Bands, the Kansas City Symphony, the Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Cape Symphony (Barnstable, Massachusetts), The Florida Orchestra, and Symphony Arlington. He has led successful initiatives to expand audiences, develop educational programs, and forge partnerships with local businesses and community organizations.

“I am honored and excited to join the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra as its Executive Director,” said Doney. “I believe that music has the power to inspire, connect, and transform lives, and I am committed to ensuring that the orchestra continues to be a vibrant cultural cornerstone in Abilene. Together with the talented musicians, dedicated staff, and a supportive community, we will create unforgettable musical experiences and strengthen the orchestra’s presence in the  region as we approach our 75th anniversary season in 2025.”

Community volunteer Mandy Gollihar, who previously served as Board of Governors’ president and served as Acting Executive Director during the search process, will work with Doney as Assistant Executive Director through October 31.

The Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra eagerly anticipates the future under John Doney’s leadership and invites the community to join them in celebrating this exciting new chapter.
